Labour’s Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has announced plans to get serious about the private rental sector in 2024.
In a New Year message, Burnham revealed that a public consultation on the new Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter would begin soon. The charter aims to recognize decent landlords while enabling residents to distinguish between responsible and irresponsible landlords.
Alongside the charter, renters will be given the right to request a property check, and inspection and enforcement capabilities will be enhanced in collaboration with local councils. Burnham emphasized that the days of bad landlords being untouchable are coming to an end. The charter, initially proposed in 2023, will cover both the private and social housing sectors, focusing on raising standards in all rented homes in Greater Manchester.
