A local newspaper is reporting that the North Devon council claims that local landlords, housing charities, and estate agents have “overwhelmingly” supported a move to clamp down on Airbnbs and other short lets.
According to the council, over 85% of respondents in a consultation backed a change in policy for Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs). The proposal aims to prohibit HMOs from being used for mixed accommodation, involving both permanent and short-term lets, as the council deems such a mix “inappropriate and problematic.”
However, the council notes that only 124 people in total supported the proposal, reflecting a relatively low response rate to the consultation. Some respondents who disagreed expressed concerns about enforcement and argued that landlords should have the freedom to choose how they use their properties.
