If you are a tenant, you will need to let your landlord know in advance if you want to end your tenancy – this is called giving notice.

Giving notice must be done correctly by the tenant to avoid paying rent after moving out. A tenant may still have to pay other bills – for example, council tax.

A tenant will have to pay their rent until at least the end of their notice period or fixed term. They might need to pay rent after their fixed term or move out date if they have failed to give notice in the correct way. This depends on the type of tenancy agreement they have.

Tenants can Contact their  nearest Citizens Advice if they need advice.
